Skills
Sewing Machine
I have several years experience using a sewing machine. Due to my area of study within textiles I have often used the sewing machine for unusual or experimental materials which has helped improve my sewing skills and creates a better understanding of what foot/needles/tension needs to be used.
Knitting Machine
I have 4Â years experience using a domestic knitting machine. Since learning how to use it to a high level in college I have invested in my own and use it mostly for personal projects. As with the sewing machine I enjoy using it for experimental work and have developed skills including casting on and off, various ribs and manipulation techniques.
Handsewing/Embroidery Skills
I use a lot of hand sewing skills in my work for finishings in garments such as buttons as well as embroidery details in textiles. I often try to replicate my sketches in embroidery designs and use it as a method of illustration
Fabric Manipulation- Textile Development
Due to my background in textiles, my studies emphasised textile development and fabric experimentation. This meant using a combination of traditional techniques as well as mixing techniques to create something new. Understanding material has been vital in my growth as a fashion designer.
Pattern Drafting
I have 4 years of experience with pattern drafting, it having been a core aspect of my degree. In college I learned how to draw up basic blocks and I developed this skill more during my two work placements.
Adobe
I have 4 years experience using Adobe, predominantly Illustrator and Photoshop. Digital design is an area that greatly interests me and I am keen to continue growing this skill. I have successfully applied these skills to other areas such as laser cutting, 3D print and tech packs.
Digital Illustration
As mentioned I have experience using Adobe Illustrator and have massively improved my digital drawing skills through both college work and personal projects and commissions. I use a mix of Procreate and Adobe Illustrator when working to allow a mix of blended fluid colour as well as technical line drawing which can be applied to flat sketches in design
3D Printing
I used the 3D printer during my time in college. I have experimented with printing onto fabric as part of my textile development and have also printed buttons to be used as finishings on garments. I am interested in further learning how to turn my own illustrations into potential printed material
Laser Cutting
I used laser cutting a lot during my graduate collection. In the image shown I designed a puzzle component textile using the laser cutter to cut identical pieces. This modular design allows the textile to built onto the body, it is made from upcycled wetsuits and scrap neoprene fabric
Tech Packs
Tech packs are an important part of fashion design, I have developed my flat sketching skills in the last 2 years of college and learned how to assemble a tech pack both through my work experience and during my graduate collection.
Photoshoot Experience
I have been involved in a number of photoshoots through my college work which has allowed me to familiarise myself with the process behind it and has given me an opportunity to style my model and give direction on how I want my work displayed. For my graduate collection my class organised our own photoshoot and I shot my own images.
